Basic Info About Marine Mammals
Marine mammals are very similar to their land dwelling brethren, accept have adapted so they can live all or most of their life in the ocean. Some adaptations they have made is most have a thick layer of blubber (fat), to keep them warm. They have streamlined bodies to help them swim faster. Many species can stay under water for a long time, but must come to the surface to breathe. Marine mammals have the ability to stay under water for long periods, storing extra oxygen in their muscles and blood. They also have more blood than land mammals, this allows them to direct the flow of their blood only to their vital organs. Allowing them to slow their heart beat so they use less oxygen.
